BAHA Programming and Follow Up Care

BAHA Programming and Follow Up Care

You may be a candidate for a Bone Anchored Hearing Aid.

Bone Anchored Hearing Aids (BAHAs) are used when patients are diagnosed with mixed or conductive hearing loss or single-sided deafness. These devices work by bypassing the damaged outer and middle ear and sending sounds directly to the inner ear using bone conduction. Bone conduction implants are a stable, long-term, yet flexible solution for patients with mixed or conductive loss or single-sided deafness.

These types of bone anchored hearing aids have an internal portion and an external portion. The internal portion is surgically implanted and is either an abutment or a magnet that is implanted into the skull to reach the cochlea. The external portion of the BAHA attaches to the head via the abutment or magnet. This external portion picks up the sound with the microphone and sends the sound vibrations through the skull to stimulate the cochlea. While traditional hearing aids use air conduction to transmit sound, BAHA bypasses the damaged outer and middle ear and uses bone conduction to directly stimulate the inner ear.

Dr. Guthrie can help determine whether you are a candidate for BAHA surgery and the implant. During your appointment, Dr. Guthrie will review the candidacy guidelines and further discuss the differences between traditional hearing aids, BAHA, and cochlear implants to ensure the patient gets the most appropriate device for their particular hearing loss. She will then give you a clear picture of what to expect if you move forward.
